Traditional Chinese Medicine uses acupuncture, cupping, herbal medicine, diagnostic testing, and diet to restore health and vitality.

How it Works

The ancient Chinese discovered a system of energy circulation in the body, which is interdependent with all the bodily functions. This energy is called ā€œqiā€ in Chinese (pronounced chee), and it circulates in a system of channels called meridians. The acupuncture meridian system consists of twelve primary meridians and sixty secondary ones. There are hundreds of acupuncture points on the surface of the body that are connected to the meridians. Each has a precise location and a specific effect on the meridians when stimulated. Acupuncture treats pain and disease by stimulation of these points with the insertion of thin needles. The fundamental strategy of acupuncture is to utilize the points to harmonize, strengthen or unblock the flow of qi in the body.

What it Feels Like

Acupuncture treatment is a very pleasurable and relaxing experience that lasts about 45 to 90 minutes. The Japanese Style needles used are so thin, there is little or no discomfort upon insertion. The treatment promotes the release of endorphins, which allows one to enter a state of deep relaxation, somewhat between wake and sleep. The locations and number of points used in treatment vary according to symptoms and conditions. The points most often used are located on the arms, legs, and either side of the spine. Once the needles are inserted, they are left in place for approximately 25 minutes. Additional stimulation may be used to facilitate the treatment by applying a light electrical current to the needles.

What to Expect

The results of acupuncture are often dramatic and may provide immediate relief from symptoms. Most commonly, patients with acute symptoms will experience improvement in their symptoms with only a few treatments. For patients with more chronic symptoms, typically a series of six to twelve treatments is recommended because the effects of acupuncture are cumulative. One to two treatments are suggested weekly at first, and with improvement, appointments are made at progressively longer intervals. Acupuncture helps the body to heal itself naturally and the number of treatments depends on the severity of the illness.
